Sepia Scenes #14

The technique for our Sepia Scenes post for today is called HALF SEPIA.

Photobucket

Dontcha just love it?

How to do Half Sepia:

Step 1

Open a photo inside Photoshop. The half sepia photo effect works on most photos but is most useful for images with high saturation.

Step 2

In the Layers palette, click on the image button and select Hue/Saturation.

The Hue/Saturation tool will appear. First, checkmark the Colorize option near the bottom right corner. Copy the settings from the image below then click OK.

Your image should now have a bright sepia tone.

Step 3

We will now work on the layer mask of the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Make sure that you have the layer mask selected by clicking on the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers palette.

Choose Image > Apply Image and use the default settings. The only setting that you may need to adjust is the Invert setting. If you leave the Invert option unchecked, the sepia tone effect will only be visible in the brighter areas of your image. If you enable the Invert option, the sepia tone will be visible only in the darker areas of the image.

Step 4

Now we'll add a black and white adjustment layer. In the layers palette, click on the image button and choose Black & White. If you are using Photoshop CS2 or older, you will not have the Black & White menu option. Instead, choose Channel Mixer.

The Black and White or Channel Mixer (If you're using Photoshop CS2 or older) settings will appear. Simply click OK with any settings. We'll go back to edit the settings later.

Change the blending mode of the new Black & White or Channel Mixer adjustment layer to Soft Light.

Double click on the Black & White or Channel Mixer adjustment layer thumbnail to bring back the settings. Adjust the settings while looking at the preview to get the results that you desire.

I went for a little higher contrast that you might like.

Why don't you give the HALF SEPIA effect a try using whatever photo editing software you have?

This a pencil drawing of me done in Montmartre years ago by a street artist. He did it on gray paper in black pencil. I like it in sepia!

I very much like the birdhouse and tree photo! And you used an interesting technique that I'm going to try o a few of my photos to see what happens.

The half-sepia treatment has given your photo a lovely, delicate feel, and the drawing looks great in sepia.

Lovely effect. It's too late at night (UK) for me to follow your instructions, so I'll try again in the daytime ;O)

Mary, judi's entry on Mr Linky doesn't work when I click on it - it takes me to some other web page - but then I saw where she left a comment here, so I clicked on it & it takes me to her page. Just thought you could check it out.

Hi!
I really like that tree photo! It looks like it's been standing there for the longest time just waiting for a bird to make a nest Have a great day!!

I use an older version of Paint Shop Pro -- I'm still back on version 7! I don't know if I can do this half thing or not... I'm going to have to look into it. That is a great effect though. I love that portrait of you too -- what a fun thing to have!

Okay, I was up for the challenge!
I am using Photobucket, and this was my first attempt at layering.
It's not perfect, but I was happy with the results!
cheers,

Very cool effect! I don't have a clue how to do it, even with instructions, but I like it.

Hi, Mary The Teach, I have two for this week, one by accident, it just sort of turned out sepia to correct a problem. You'll know which one. '~)
I LOVE this birdhouse. You've really outdone yourself. As for your portrait in sepia, I would expect nothing less!

Very interesting combination. I like the birdhouse shot. I don't have Photoshop, so I'm guessing I can't do this :-)

Um... Mar? Are we still in that pseudo time warp? Or have I ruptured the space-time continuum and fast forwarded myself a week?

(Dammit Ray! I told you not to cross the streams!)

Your street artist is impressive! So is the rendering you've done of his work. And the birdhouse is simply awesome.

I actually had a sepia image for my Watery Wednesday this week too (which oddly enough got as many comments on the toning as it did the subject... I should be wounded, but I'm not). But since they come out at different times (and I'm hardly short of photos in any case!) I didn't "multi-task" that one. I went with something land-based for SS instead.

I don't have any photoshop programs. Is there one you recommend. There are so many programs.
